Fossil And Wine Discovery Day For Four - NSW
'A look at our environment in the context of Australia's geological history. Rocks and fossils hold the clues to what our world was like in the past. The rocks in the Canberra Region tell of a time when the area was beneath the sea, of violent volcanic eruptions and of massive Earth movements. These rocks and their history are foundations of today's topography, climate, biosphere and soil in the region. Discover how geology and its processes have influenced our natural environment, the way we live, the scenery we admire and even the wine we drink. After an overview from the top of a local landmark, we leave Canberra and drive West to the secluded Wee Jasper Valley. Along the way we stop at a number of interesting geological and fossil sites, which will help you get the picture. Learn how to read rocks from a jargon-free geologist who will help you interpret what you see. We visit the beautiful Carey's Cave, formed in rocks made of the creatures that were once part of an ancient coral reef ecosystem and we taste the wine made from grapes grown in the regions soil. Wine comes from grapes, grapes grow on vines, vines grow in soil and soil comes from rock. Topography, aspect, climate, biosphere and soil, all have been influenced by their geological history. In the winemaking industry, the concept of terroir relates to the interplay of these natural elements. The French believe that terroir has a strong influence on the wine they make. We visit a number of wineries in the region, taste the wines and ask the local vignerons for their part of the story. Your day will be filled with amazing discoveries, fine foods and fine wine and by the end of the day you will know that you don't need to be a geologist to read rocks.'
