As beautiful and amazing as the Great Barrier Reef is, there is much more diversity than most tourists realise. Caves, ship wrecks and reefs are accessible with special dives from state to state. Western Australia's most famous aquatic attraction, swimming with the Whale Shark (the world's largest fish) occurs between the months of April through to July. Further South East in South Australia, a popular attraction is the hunting and cage diving with the Great White Shark. In Australia it is possible to dive all year round, although some are best dived in summer, generally due to the temperature of the water temperature. In cold weather the cold waters require divers to wear thick wetsuit or a dry suit. Some of the most popular tourist dive sites are those that are best dived during the Australian Winter months. The popular diving sites of the Far North Queensland are less crowded and usually cheaper during the winter months. During winter divers also need not worry about the dangerous Box Jellyfish even although the jellyfish rarely ventures to the outer reef anyway. On the South Coast of New South Wales, it is often better to dive in the winter. The visibility is much better and the water temperature is actually higher than in it is in summer. All kinds of diving are available in Australia and as mentioned; the Great Barrier Reef is spectacular but not your only option. In the New South Wales highland area three unusual dives are available called ice, altitude and freshwater. Ice diving is only available in winter with the altitude and freshwater diving available year round. |
