As much as I enjoy shopping, the super-malls do not have a lot of variety. The shops around Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise pretty much cater to all tourists and locals. There are a myriad of arcades and shopping centers that criss-crosses Cavill Mall, with a mixture of shops. There is a huge tourist market here (which means most stores are open 7 days), thus you can buy anything and everything – but you just need to know where to look. There are duty free shops selling luxury brands, there are local street wear brands selling surfy type clothes and there are the chain stores which sell generic fashions. Some of the larger malls are detailed here. If you are a label junkie, head to Orchid and Elkhorn Avenues which have Cartier, Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Salvatore Ferragamo stores. Most shops along this strip are open until 9pm each night. The biggest market on the Gold Coast is the Carara Markets, held every weekend. Other markets on the Gold Coast are also held at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, Coolangatta, Robina Town Centre, Tamborine Mountain, Canungra Country Market, Paradise Point Art and Craft Market. The Surfers Paradise beachfront night markets on The Esplanade are held each Friday night from 5.30pm (weather permitting). It has over 270 specialty retailers within the open air and under cover complex, with restaurants, café’s and a food court. The children can play in the Children’s Play Park. It has over 5000 free car parks, and is also reachable by the water taxi service and buses. Harbour Town is an outlet type shopping centre with many of the top Australian labels represented here. It also houses the Gold Coast’s largest cinema complex, with 14 massive screens. The Oasis Shopping Centre is not a large centre; however it does have the convenience of the Woolworth supermarket and the every day services such as a post office, banks, a dry cleaner plus several hair, health and beauty salons. There are also a variety of restaurants and café’s that are open every day and night of the week. This has the added convenience of being connected to the monorail with Conrad Jupiter’s Casino. Australia Fair is situated 2km north of Surfers Paradise directly opposite Southport Broadwater. There are over 220 stores, including Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, Best & Less in addition to Birch Carroll & Coyle cinemas and a range of services such as Australia Post, Medicare and dry-cleaners. Marina Mirage is a twin level shopping centre overlooking Broadwater and the adjacent marina. It is located 5 minutes drive from Surfers Paradise and has some fancy neighbors, opposite to the Sheraton Mirage and next to the Palazzo Versace. There are award-winning restaurants, designer boutiques, top fashion labels and art galleries, catering for the higher end market. Hours for shopping on the Gold Coast are varied, however most shops are open between 9.00am and 5.30pm on weekdays. Most larger centers will have Thursday and Friday night shopping until 9.00pm. On Saturdays most shops are open between 9.00am and 12.00noon, however the major centers usually stay open until 5.00pm. On Sundays some major shopping centers are open from 10.00am until 4.00pm. It’s best to give the centers a call before arrival, as each shopping centre has varied opening hours. If they are closer to large hotels, they are usually open later, as the restaurants and bars remain open. |
